Most caregivers know that raising kids with healthy racial attitudes means having real, regular conversations about race — and about the racial inequities kids are absorbing all around them.

But knowing you should talk about race with kids and actually doing it are two different things. Many caregivers who believe these conversations matter still don't have them.

And here's the more alarming twist: among caregivers who say they do talk to kids about race, a subset — mostly, though not only, White parents — are actually speaking in platitudes that don't engage race at all.

Dr. Brigitte Vittrup is the Dean of the College of Professional Education and a Professor of Child Development at Texas Woman's University. She holds a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from The University of Texas at Austin.
