Scenarios for Caregivers: Talking with Asian American Children About Racism and Bias

4

This reflection guide helps caregivers to Asian American children prepare for those hard, real moments when kids are on the receiving end of racism and also help them understand how to avoid perpetuating racism against others —on the playground, in the classroom, or among friends. Through three short, relatable role-play scenarios, this resource models how to talk with children (ages 3–10) about race and identity in age-appropriate, affirming ways.

You'll find:

  • Sample language you can adapt on the spot or return to later
  • Conversation starters to help your child feel seen and supported
  • Ideas for follow-up actions at home and school

Whether you use it on your own, with a partner, or in a caregiver circle, this tool builds your confidence to respond with care, clarity, and love.

EmbraceRace is grateful to Dr. Anna Kimura, Amaesha Durazi, Dr. Abby Saavedra, and the research team of the Asian American Families Study for their partnership in creating this and other resources for caregivers to Asian American children.
