Explainer Video For Kids: Who is Asian American?
This short, kid-friendly video introduces the rich diversity within Asian American communities — perfect for watching together with your child. After watching the videos together, discuss your reactions, reflections, and wonderings by using the accompanying discussion prompts.
Discussion prompts:
- Are you Asian American? Do you know someone who is Asian American? What does it mean to be Asian American?
- People all come from different racial/ethnic groups and cultures. Can you name the ethnic groups or cultures that your family is from?
- If you’re not sure, here are some examples of racial/ethnic groups: Filipino/a/x, Indian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, Indonesian, Korean, Sri Lankan, Thai, Cambodian, Hmong, Taiwanese, Malaysian, Bangladeshi, Laotian, Singaporean, White, Irish, Norwegian, Italian, African American, Haitian, Somali, Jamaican, Native American, Navajo, Cherokee, Latino/a/x, Mexican, Cuban, Salvadoran, Dominican, Guatemalan, and so many more!
- What is Asia? Can we find Asia on a map?
- Asian Americans eat lots of different foods with their family and community. Draw a picture of a memory related to food that makes you happy. What were you eating? Who were you with? Why does this memory make you happy?
