Course Description
Immigration, gun violence, voting rights, political violence, protests -- your kids have probably heard about these issues from peers, social media, news sources, and lots of other places! How can parents, educators, and caregivers have thoughtful, race-conscious and justice-focused conversations with kids in response to these challenging current events? What can we share and what is age-appropriate information? How do we care for our children in the midst of these tense and emotionally-charged times?
Join us for a 7-session course in Talking with Kids about Race & Justice in Today's World. Designed for parents, educators, & caregivers to children ages 8-14, the course will provide the science behind children's racial learning development in crucial stages of growth and how to prepare for difficult conversations about current events, through the lens of systemic racism and injustice. Participants will gain tools for dissecting media narratives and key talking points for crucial concepts connected to race & justice issues. Come ready to share your questions, practice conversation about current events, and workshop scenarios!
**Due to the nature of these courses which will require foundational knowledge about race, racism, and children's racial learning in order to participate fully in discussion, participants are REQUIRED to have taken one of EmbraceRace's Foundations courses prior to this course:

Not sure if this is a good use of time and hard-earned money? Check out these comments from previous participants:
"I loved that I had a space free of judgment where I was able to talk about sensitive things. I also loved that I was able to find better ways to call in and not out when it comes to having uncomfortable conversations with others about things that matter to me." -POC affinity group participant
"Normally evening commitments on a weekday feel like a burden, but these meetings felt energizing. I really appreciated hearing everyone's perspectives and talking through the discussion topics together. It is helpful to have a space to process race-related issues with other white people because, ironically, it helps me leave behind some of the white dominant culture elements like perfectionism." -White affinity group participant
"We began as strangers and ended as far-flung friends!" -POC affinity group participant
"It was great to talk, listen, learn and grow. Having new resources to explore was also helpful. Great group of people who care to make a difference. [The facilitator] listened to all, and found ways to connect thoughts back to the focus for each evening's conversation. She provided videos and ideas that helped jump start and deepen the conversation....challenging our thinking and encouraging all to stretch in our learning." -White affinity group participant
