Have you ever struggled to respond to a racial insult or microaggression? Did you think about what you could have said later, with regret? Kids have these moments, too, either experiencing racial slights or witnessing them, and not knowing what to say. As adults in the lives of kids, we can help prepare them!

When kids are able to prepare with trusted adults, they are less likely to internalize hurtful comments. Even a small “Ouch” or “That’s not OK” in response reframes the experience for the targeted person and everyone present.

Join us for a conversation between two researchers who've done a lot of work on exactly this kind of preparation. Dr. Riana Elyse Anderson, developer of the EMBRace intervention, and Dr. Howard C. Stevenson, whose Racial Encounter Coping Appraisal Socialization Theory (RECAST) and racial literacy framework — read, recast, resolve — grounds this work.
