Drawing Differences Art Lessons celebrated with KidLit Artists
EmbraceRace's Drawing Differences art lessons encourage kids and their adults to draw across differences, with a focus on drawing across race. It's been used in schools, libraries and museums across the country. This video features scenes from a Drawing Differences celebration at the Mead Museum of Art in Amherst, Massachusetts. We were joined by children's book artists and writers Raúl Colón, Grace Lin and Oge Mora and by kids and adults - some of whom had been using the Drawing Differences art lessons already, and others who had the opportunity to draw at the event.
Drawing Differences are a set of fun art lessons that give all of us the space and tools to observe closely, see and mix color, see and draw individual feature differences, and feel seen ourselves. All along, the lessons offer support to talk about what you're doing and noticing about what racial difference looks like. These conversations are foundations for talking about race in the world, which is important to do with kids and is also supported in these lessons.
